The Napoleonic Wars

An ancestor of mine with the surname of Livingstone was believed to have been killed in the French wars and left a child named Ann but it is also possible that his death occurred just prior to her birth. Ann married a William Stewart from Stirling in 1834. He was a cooper. William, was born in Stirling. He was the son of John Stewart and Janet Thomson.

The Napoleonic Wars killed over 32,000 soldiers from the British side. It was likely that Mr Livingstone fought in the battle of Waterloo which was the last of the 20-year Napoleonic wars and ended in June 1815.

I believe that the ancestor I am searching for may be William Livingstone because my great grandfather Robert Stewart whose mother was Ann Livingstone used the names of his own relatives in naming his children and his first child’s name was William Livingstone (Stewart). This is just one possibility. William and Ann never named any of their sons William. They were John, and Robert, therefore it is possible that Ann’s father’s name could have been Robert or John Livingston (e). My theory is based on the fact that under the Scottish naming traditions of the 1700s & 1800s, the second son was often named after the child’s maternal grandfather.

I understand that the wives of some servicemen were eligible for some kind of government allowance providing they were classed as poor and had children but it is unlikely that Ann’s mother would have been one of those unless Ann had an older sibling and there is no evidence of this.

We believe that Ann’s mother remarried a Mr. Miller and they had at least three children named Robert, Walter, and Andrew. It was noted in the 1841 census that an Andrew and Walter Miller were staying with William and Ann Stewart (Livingstone) at Old Kilpatrick. What was the connection between the MIller’s and Ann and William I wonder?

Our ancestors from 3 and 4 generations back were all adamant about the David Livingstone link and that Ann Livingstone’s father died in the French wars. It is just a matter of putting all of the pieces together.

If anyone has information about this story that could help fill a much-needed gap in our family tree then it is much appreciated. I believe that the British military records are held at Kew in England. If anyone is able to visit them and check them out for me it would be much appreciated.

The Emotional Rollercoaster of Motorsport

The emotional rollercoaster of motorsport can work on both long and short timescales. Sometimes, a team’s transition from the back of the field up to the podium can take months or years. Sometimes the transition back can take hours. The weekend just passed was certainly one that had its ups and downs.

The team entered the weekend with all three of its drivers in the top 5 of the championship, and one, currently leading it. The confidence in the car was at an all-time high, and reliability has been improving all season. The track, one of the fastest in the country, should favour the rear wheel drive BMWs, and the weather was looking good. This should be a good weekend. The leading driver was carrying maximum ballast as is mandated which wasn’t going to help his chances, but shouldn’t cause too much of an issue. He’s a talented driver who’s had ballast before – not a problem.

The rollercoaster reached its apex.

Free practice one was spent scrubbing tyres. No real testing as such was done until the end of the session, but a brake bias error meant a spin under breaking coming in to a heavily gravel-trapped hairpin. The time lost due to the red flag for recovery, and the clearing out of the huge amount of gravel, meant there was no time for any setup changes or refinement during the session.

The rollercoaster was over the top now.

During Free Practice Two, multiple setup changes of varying success and impact were tried, but there was very little marked improvement in lap times. The problem was simply that our driver had only two laps to test each setup change before pitting and trying the next thing on the list. Usually, these changes are spread out across two sessions. This weekend we had one. Not every change you make is going to improve the car, and unfortunately, as FP2 closed, the car was not on the pace we had come to expect by this stage of the season.

Down we go.

Next up was qualifying. Given the natural advantage of rear-wheel drive in wet conditions, the ominous rainclouds were actually a welcome sight. Rain would equalise the pack a bit more and give the BMWs a chance to make up any performance deficit. The first few laps were dry but the pace wasn’t there. Then the rain came, and boy, did it come! The rain was so torrential that the session was in fact red flagged due to safety concerns. By the time the session restarted, the cars were suffering from water ingress in the electronics and ended up at the very back of the grid for race 1. The back of the grid, 28th place, with 75kg of ballast in the car.

Where’s the bottom?

Following the disappointing qualifying session, the weather worsened. Something not seen frequently in Blightly, but a tornado (yes, a TORNADO) came through the paddock. This freak weather caused terminal damage to the hospitality awnings and the entire team was out in the (now returned) torrential rain, angle grinding, cutting, hammering and spannerring to get the remains of the awning safe. The entire team, still reeling from qualifying, were now drenched through, not to mentioned the damage done to team property or to relationships with sponsors and VIPs.

Is this it?

The engineers and drivers sat down and discussed an action plan. What could be done to recover the weekend? Was everything lost? Absolutely not! Decisions were made and changes to the car were done late in to the night. Everything adjustable was adjusted. Gear ratios were changed. Engine maps were tweaked. Like something out of a Hollywood blockbuster, the car was transformed. Untested, yes, but transformed.

When do we go back up?

Race one began in glorious sunshine. The team and cars had dried out overnight, but the long walk down to the back of the grid was not something the team often had to do. The untested car seemed solid on the outlap to the grid, but that is never a real test of performance. Final checks done, 75kg of ballast on-board, 28th on the grid. The race started.

Finally, up we go!

Our driver finished 10th. He made up 18 places, an incredible result and better than anyone had hoped for. The overnight transformation had worked wonders and the speed in the car was back. 10th also meant no more ballast, as well as starting in 10th for race two. An excellent result!

Things are looking up!

Race two started with a much shorter walk down the grid. No ballast on-board, and just a few minor tweaks to compensate for the 75kg lower weight. And you know what? He only went and won it! He drove like the professional he is and put the car at the front of the pack, winning by almost 3 seconds. Who would have thought after the dismal Saturday, that race day would include a victory. What’s more, another of our drivers was third, so a double podium. An excellent result!

I can see the end now.

All that was left was race three. Ballast back in the car due to winning race 2, and a reverse grid meant starting down in the middle of the pack. The unfavoured hard tyres were also required for this race. The result was a solid middle of the pack finish. Not terrible, but not on the scale of success of races one and two.

Time to get off.

So the drivers leave the round with all three still in the top 10, two still in the top 5, and one still leading the championship. A result that although expected on Friday, seemed to fade away during Saturday.

The value in persevering, not giving up under hardship, and striving to win no matter how the odds are stacked against you cannot be understated. A bad practice or qualifying session, does not have to ruin your race. It doesn’t have to ruin your championship hopes. It doesn’t even have to ruin your day.

Keep your chin up, your head in the game and determination in overdrive, and as a team, great things will happen.

Please remain seated until the ride has come to a complete stop.

South Carolina Adventure Travel

British Adventure Traveler Claire believed that she might enhance her adventure vacation by planning it with the help of someone who lived at her target destination. On previous trips, Claire either cooperated with a local tour company or she hired a local guide upon arrival. For her trip to South Carolina in the United States, she tried something different. Through BritishExpats.com, she made contact with countrymen who live in Charleston, South Carolina.

With their help, she determined to fly over for the final week of Charleston’s Spoleto Festival and one of the expats that she contacted offered to guide her while she vacationed in Charleston. She also suggested that Claire break up her trip, to experience “Chuck town,” (Charleston) on the front and back ends of her holiday by renting a car for a trip upstate to get at a Carolina peach, freshly harvested from the orchard.

The Carolinians consider the Spoleto festival as a kickoff to tourist season, and while many of the events directly connect with the Italian celebration of the same name, the festival means party long and well. For the well-heeled, Spoleto Charleston provides opera, Shakespearian plays, and opulent balls. For Claire, an open-air jazz festival, dirty dancing in the street, and fireworks juiced her interest in American pub-style fun. She booked her flights with Aer Lingus after she learned that she could get a seat on one of their flights mostly occupied by Spoleto-bound revelers. As she hoped, that group adopted her during the flight, welcoming her to join them to experience as many of the Charleston events that she wanted.

Claire got little sleep in the first few days of Spoleto. She enjoyed a sumptuous dinner before a street party every evening, followed by a main event and fireworks. Up early the following day for a grand southern American breakfast with lots of coffee, Claire toured old town Charleston by carriage and she traveled by boat to Fort Sumter in the harbor. Claire power-napped whenever she could to “recharge her batteries,” not wanting to miss anything. During her nap on the boat ride back from Fort Sumter, her sleepy head rocked over onto the shoulder of a British Navy Officer who had also traveled to Charleston on the Aer Lingus flight.

Gallantly, he did not wake her until the boat docked. After treating Claire to coffee, he invited her to join him for a tour of a visiting British warship at the Charleston Navy Base. At lunch aboard the ship with the officers and their wives, Claire mentioned her plan to go get a peach, and they all got into that too! Two days later, they whisked her away in a convoy of four cars as the British Navy Couples drove on a “staff ride” to the King’s Mountain Battlefield in upstate to pay their respects to Major Patrick Ferguson and his men, British casualties in the American Revolutionary War.

But, for Claire, their stop at a peach orchard in York set the stage for the high point of her holiday. There, for the first time in her life, Claire took a big bite into a dead ripe freestone peach. The incredibly sweet juice exploded in her mouth! It splashed onto her cheeks, dribbled down her chin, and onto her dress! Surrounded by cheers and the laughter of her newfound friends, Claire experienced the signature moment in her latest adventure travel. #TAG1writer

Medical Audits – Why You Need One Right Away

Audits are important tools that ensure the proper management of finances with a strict adherence to established rules and regulations why exploring areas where internal process improvements can be implemented.

For physicians and healthcare providers, the importance of audits, particularly for medical claims cannot be overestimated. Generally, there are two major areas where claims audits present better medical operations practices. First, the audits of operations within your practice also termed as self-audit, is used to determine grey areas, areas where mistakes are being made and areas where improvements can be made to drive significant difference. The other is the audit of the claims administrator.

In the absence of proper management, medical claims can be very costly and complicated. It can even go as far as damaging business reputation. Irrespective of the area being explored by the audit, an audit process generally:

• Locates errors made in medical billing

• Proffers solutions for improving recovery opportunities and

• Ensures that a medical establishment and practice is in tune with the latest compliance guides and regulation that govern medical claims

There are also many other benefits of medical audit claims.

The medical administrator audit claims highlighted above is an independent audit that aims to identify discrepancies in both lost monetary opportunities and adherence to regulations. It is an audit that show how your claims are being handled by the claims administrator and a string reiteration of your commitment to being frugal with every penny being spent as well as ensuring that it is being spent as it should.

This audit is very important as the centers for Medicare and Medicaid services has reported that as many as 12.7 percent of Medicare fee-for-service claims have errors. No matter the size of your medical practice and number of employees, audits serve a great purpose.

To remain thorough, audits should also not be done once but slated for a routine check in order to improve the medical claims process over a longer span of time.

Such audits can be a Random Sample Audit, Hybrid or Comprehensive audit. The extended benefits of a self-audit also include:

• Preventing and lowering the chances of improper payments

• Ensuring the accurate submission of claims

• Improving patient care

• Lowering the need for an external audit

• Reiterating the need for corrupt-free practices within the staff and organization as a whole

Self-audits require thorough examinations of the claims process within your organization and your employed medical practices, it also helps you to make the best evaluation of areas of “risk” that are most susceptible to errors.

Recording a Life History – Simplified

Last summer I found out that my husband’s grandmother did not have any kind of life history recorded. She does not have any journals and pictures are scarce. She is the last living grandparent on either side and the thought of my children not knowing her or even being able to learn about her through pictures and memoirs is devastating. I was determined to make some kind of record of her life history but found myself in front of a very daunting task.

I learned that making a record of someone’s life does not have to be as overwhelming as a novel-long biography or a cinema-worthy video- but that even a simple photo or handwritten story can be a treasure for years to come.

Recording a life history can be simplified.

First, decide on the structure you would like to use. For example, would you prefer a video, picture book, timeline in journal entries or biographical articles. Consider your resources, skills and time available for this project. Find the one that is the most practical and achievable in the time allotted for this project.

The next step and the most challenging will be gathering as much information as possible. Much of this information will be obtained by simply asking the right questions. Prepare your questions before the interview so that you can organize the stories into a chronological timeline. It was helpful for me to talk to her children before the interview. They remembered events that their mother had long since forgotten. Here are some thoughts to consider while planning your interview questions:

~ Were there any significant dates in history during their life? How were they affected?

~ Other than big historical events, the trivial things can be fun as well if they remember them- for example the price of bread or how they received the news.

~ Are there other people you would like to interview to get a different perspective of this person and their life? Children? Friends?

~ Try to include stories instead of just facts. Stories can reveal someone’s character in a way that questions and answers cannot.

~ Legacy questions- keep in mind that what you write is how future generations will remember this person. What kind of legacy would they like to leave? What are some life lessons they learned that they would like to pass along? Financial? Family-oriented, etc.

During the actual interview, remember to have fun and enjoy getting to know the person. Be genuinely interested instead of simply filling in your answers. Try to be flexible with your questions and let the conversation flow naturally so they feel comfortable sharing details of experiences with you and reminiscing.

Lastly, put your final project together. Whenever possible ask for the person’s opinion on the structure or layout before the project is completed. Respect that, although you are doing much of the work, this is their history and they may have a preference on how it is presented. They may have not given this much thought, but it is polite to ask.

When the life history project is completed, keep it in a place where you can pull it out often to remember them when they are gone and if possible make copies for other family members or friends to treasure as well. Be sure to keep a digital copy if possible for backup. This is one project you will never regret having completed and with a simplified approach it need not be overwhelming.

Waterfall Destinations Around The World

The chill of the high altitude, the fresheness in the air, the soothing green of the surrounding, and of course, the cascade of water torrenting down a rocky edge, but in a beautiful tranquil manner – everything makes waterfalls the ideal sightseeing scene. Though some of the below mentioned waterfalls may be less approachable than the others, you should know about them and chalk out a plan to take a trip there.

Gullfoss (Golden falls), Iceland

This is one of the most gorgeous waterfalls, especially during the winter. Gullfoss is particularly known for its shape, this wild waterfall tumbles on the Hvítá River in two tiers at 90 degree angles to each other. Due to a crevice, the river Hvítá seems to disappear into the abyss. Set in an environment of mystique, the allure of this waterfall is in its surrounding as well.

Niagra falls, USA and Canada

Spanning across the two countries of Canada and USA, Niagara Falls is one of the most well-known ones in the world. Owing to its popularity, the surroundings aren’t as naturesque as the others. But easy accessibility and numerous view points make it desirable. It is formed of two sections – the Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side and the American Falls on the American side – that are separated by an island. The Horseshoe Falls are more impressive: water here drops 53 m, while the American Falls drop only 21-30 m.

Victoria falls, Zimbabwe

The largest singular waterfall in the world, Victoria Falls spreads out to 1.7km with an average flow of 1 million litres every second! If these figures don’t amaze you, then I don’t know what will. If you go travelling near it, you will have a hard time keeping yourself dry, thanks to all the mist around it. An UNESCO World Heritage site, it is one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Victoria falls is truly a work of sublime beauty.

Plitvice falls, Croatia

While most of the other waterfalls mentioned here are singular ones, Plitvice Falls is more like a network of falls, making it one of the most unique one. The many drops end in various hues of blue, ranging from clear to azure to turquoise. These finally extend onto a limestone canyon. Located within a national park, one can hike around and across them. The national park is also an UNESCO World Heritage site.

Angel falls, Venezuela

World’s highest uninterrupted, permanent waterfall deserved a place on this list. It falls mysteriously out of a tabletop mountain in Canaima National Park, in its full glory. Standing as tall as 979 metres, it’s a sight to behold. Though reaching it is a bit of a complicated affair, it hasn’t stopped the true lovers of nature. After reaching the national park, you need a river boat ride and a hike to reach the Angel Fall lookout.

Yosemite falls, USA

Located in Sierra Nevada, California, it is one of the highest falls in the USA (739 metres). Being easy to access, this is one of the most popular tourist destination. The fact that it’s located in the incomparably beautiful Yosemite Valley, too helps its case. The source of this waterfall is melting snow, which is why, sometimes the stream may cease due to a lesser amount of snow.

How to Keep Your Gadgets Safe While on an Adventure Trip

Taking an adventure trip can be amazing fun, full of excitement and adrenaline. The challenge is keeping your gadgets safe during this trip. There are so many ways in which your gadgets could be compromised – pickpockets, you drop it in a river, canyon, from a moving vehicle, and so on.

You could just leave without any of your gadgets and go completely off grid, but that may not be such a good idea, especially if you’re going on an adventure trip. These gadgets help you find hotels at short notice, making sense of the local public transportation system, translating languages to help you communicate better, money transfers, GPS, etc.

So, how do you ensure that these handy little devices are protected during your adventures? Here are a few tips to help you out.

Get Some Gadget Travel Insurance

Before you do anything else, get all your gadgets insured. Most good travel insurance policies will offer gadget travel insurance which will cover your gadgets. When you’re on adventure trips, there are chances that your gadgets could be lost, stolen or damaged. However, if they are insured, it will take just a few days to have them replaced.

Do NOT Have too Many Gadgets

If you carry fewer gadgets, there are also fewer chances of damage, loss or theft. Having too many gadgets attracts attention, which means that there is a higher chance that your expensive devices could get stolen. It is also easier to lose track of them when you have too many gadgets. The best thing you can do is just keep one or two gadgets with you on your trip; usually a smartphone and a camera are enough.

Use a Simple Over-the-Shoulder Bag to Store Your Gadgets

If you are carrying a fancy bag in which you have put your gadgets, you are inviting trouble. Instead, get a non-descript over-the-shoulder bag that you can clutch in front of you in a crowded area. You can even invest in one of those anti-theft bags that are available in the market today.

Change Your Camera Strap

Nothing invites more unwelcome attention than a camera strap that advertises the brand of your camera. Change your camera strap to something low-key and non-descript, so that even if the strap hangs out of your bag, no one will pay attention to it.

Make Use of the Hotel Safe

Most hotels provide a safe in their guest rooms. So use it. Your insurance company will not cover thefts from hotel rooms if the gadgets were not kept in a safe. And if you’re going to be out the entire day participating in an adventure activity, then you don’t want to be encumbered with too much baggage.

These ideas may sound like overkill, but remember those devices you have can cost a pretty penny when you add it all up. And don’t forget, all people are not evil, you can get lucky and find a Good Samaritan who will locate your lost or stolen gadgets and return them to you.

Medical Billing Services – Choose Wisely

It’s not news nowadays that healthcare providers are heavily outsourcing their medical billing services to professional companies to look after their medical billing and collections. A number of physicians, hospitals, nursing homes, urgent care centres, laboratories, DME companies, and other entities associated with the healthcare industry have realized the need for professional handling to regain focus on revenue recovery mainly through the reduction in operational costs.

There lies another challenge ahead – to find out the proper medical billing service, which can provide you with the solution you are looking at your budget. It is extremely important to research rigorously by self-defined parameters for selecting the desired service. However, some common factors that can be broadly considered essential for most healthcare providers can be discussed:

Points to Ponder

Some basic points that cannot be overlooked in your search for the desired medical billing assistance will include the following:

• Accurate and efficient service: Go for the medical billing services that can take the onus of all your billing collections – accurate, complete, and timely payment from the third party payers and patients through latest technology to attain maximum efficiency in the system.

• Excellent references: Revenue is the key focus and you need more business for that and for more business you need more references. Look for medical billing services that have enough experience and reputation to provide you excellent referrals from physicians.

• Expert coding: Coding is one of the most important aspects of medical billing in this time of EMR and EHR technology. Sought medical billing services that can provide you with the required expertise in ICD-10 coding. Due to an absence of certified and experienced coders in their in-house team, most of the practices suffer from common coding issues like:

o Unbundling: Unbundling involves listing of different billing codes for charging for services falling under one billing code. This results in bill getting inflated because the items that should have been billed as a package rate get billed separately.

o Balance billing: This coding error arises when the balance bill sent to the patient after the insurance company’s price negotiation with the care provider and all of the hospital’s charges are supposed to be covered under the patient’s policy.

o Duplicate Billing: Another common billing error, which involves multiple bills getting generated for the same procedures or services.

• Dedicated account management: Always prefer a service that provides you, experts, to dedicatedly look after your collections without any extra charge. The account managers should always be within your communication range to provide assistance during an emergency.

• Flexible services: Sometimes you might need a single service like prior authorization. Choose a medical billing service that can offer you standalone services as and when required and not charge for a whole package for RCM or other packages. It should also be flexible enough to work in both the electronic and manual platforms as per the requirement.

• Special edge: A great and a good medical billing service can be distinguished by the virtue of that ‘something special’ it offers. A great medical billing service can maintain a seamless healthcare management through cutting-edge services for the patients, providing your practice with the professional guidance it needs to complete a comprehensive end-to-end revenue cycle management. An experienced and reliable company can do the trick for you by achieving the seamless overall transitions from your time and cash stripped condition to making your practice revenue-healthy, up, and running.

Errors, both electronic and human can nag your practice from getting the desired result. Signing a really able medical billing service will provide you with the shield from those errors saving you unnecessary loss of time and money!
